(Lot of 80) Reclaimed French Terracotta Tiles
Handmade and wood-fired centuries ago, these reclaimed French terracotta tiles bring authentic provincial charm to any home. Salvaged from a historic farmhouse, these tiles carry a unique story, ready to be repurposed in your space. The handmade nature of these tiles means no two are alike, with variations in color, size, and thickness adding to their rustic appeal. Durable and designed for flooring, they are made to withstand high-traffic areas when properly sealed and cared for, making them beautiful and functional.
These warm and lovely tiles would make an excellent powder room floor or kitchen backsplash in a new build.
French reclaimed terra cotta tiles have a history and authenticity that few floors can match. Centuries ago, these tiles were hand-made by digging up natural French clay deposits from the ground, and artisans would then slap the clay into hand-made wooden molds.
After drying, these greenware tiles were extracted from the molds and placed in row after row to dry under the sun. From there, they were stacked inside large wood-burning kilns and fired to over 1100 degrees Celsius for a minimum of three days, while the artisans kept careful watch 24 hours/day on the flame, adding more fuel as needed.
The kilns were understood to vary in degrees of heat - hotter near the bottom and cooler near the top. Color variations are due to the difference in the kiln's firing internal temperatures. The lighter-colored terra cotta tiles were placed in the hotter areas within the wood-burning kilns, whereas the darker red hexagons were positioned in less-hot areas. The flashings and burnt reds of the reclaimed terra cotta tile make for a handsome and authentic floor.
The result of this was that each fired tile would have a spectacular color range, as intriguing and prized today as it was over 200 years ago.
These terracotta tiles are reclaimed antiques, not newly manufactured.
They were initially made for flooring and are not the “Parefeuille” tiles you commonly see in today’s market. Parefeuilles were originally used on provencal roofs and ceilings, not flooring. The patina from an authentic French reclaimed terra cotta tile square or hexagon is foot-worn and prized. Its hues, variations, patina, and uneven surfaces make this exquisite flooring unique and rare.
