A bonnetiere, also known as a petite armoire or cabinet, is a single door cupboard with interior shelves. The bonnetiere was first created in the Normandy region of France in the 18th century, and was conceived for the practical means of storing one’s bonnets (hats) and coiffes (wigs) that were common headpieces of the time. The piece of furniture was such a success that it soon became a popular storage cabinet for every room of the home across Europe.

  • Found in Belgium, dating from the 18th century

  • Constructed from oak with one burl walnut panel using mortise and tenon and pegged joinery. Hand forged iron nails visible along the side panels.

  • Door hangs slightly askew, however is fully operational

  • Original hinges and (newer) locking mechanism with key

  • Three interior shelves (top shelf measures 9” D; lower two shelves measure 17” D)

  • Original finish has been stripped to reveal the natural wood tone, as found

  • Small pieces of wood have been attached to the underside of the front feet to level the cabinet, as found

  • Minor imperfections in the wood around the feet and side panels; not structural

  • Overall dimensions approximately 44” W x 23 1/4” D x 73 1/2” H
